「ゼニゴケ ルネッサンス ‐ゲノムを超えて‐」
第65回NIBBコンファレンス”Renaissance of Marchantia polymorpha ~the genome and beyond”が、2017年12月16日（土）から18日（月）の日程で，河内孝之教授（京都大学）、John Bowman教授（モナーシュ大学）と細胞動態研究部門の上田をオーガナイザーとして岡崎コンファレンスセンターにて開催された。コケ植物タイ類に属するゼニゴケ（Marchantia polymorpha）は、古代ギリシャの薬学の文献に既にその記述が見られ、この200年ほどにおいては、近代生物学におけるモデル植物として研究が重ねられてきた。その地位は20世紀終盤にはシロイヌナズナなど他のモデル植物に一旦は取って変わられることとなったが、近年その生活環や体制の有利性や研究材料としての扱いやすさが再評価され、多様な分子遺伝学的研究手法の確立とあいまって、植物科学研究者達からの熱い視線を浴びている。さらに、2017年10月5日号のCell誌にゼニゴケゲノム論文が出版され、ゼニゴケ研究復興の環境が調った。本NIBBコンファレンスは、このような状況の下で植物の基本的な機能や生命現象についての濃密な議論を展開するとともに、今後の共同研究を促進することを目的として企画された。
コンファレンスは、10カ国から30名の招待講演者、9カ国から115名の一般参加者を迎えて行われた。基調講演3演題、口頭発表27演題，ポスターから選ばれたショートトーク16演題に加え、テクニカルワークショップおよびポスター発表、さらには最終日のバンケットに至るまでの全会期を通し、個別の生命現象からゼニゴケが今後果たすべき役割やさらにその先の植物科学のあり方に至るまで、様々な視点から中身の濃い議論が展開された。会を終えた後、内外の参加者から、大変有意義なコンファレンスであったというメッセージを多く頂いた。このような国際会議をNIBBコンファレンスとして開催できたことは、オーガナイザーにとって大きな喜びである。コンファレンスを盛り上げてくださった参加者の方々はもちろん、コンファレンスを財政面でサポートしてくださった文科省科学研究費補助金新学術領域「植物発生ロジック」、大学間連携バイオバックアッププロジェクト、京都大学SPIRITSプログラム、大幸財団、コンファレンスの円滑な運営にご尽力頂いた基礎生物学研究所研究力強化戦略室の方々に、深く御礼申し上げる。

2017年12月16日（土）から18日（月）に岡崎コンフェレンスセンターにて第65回NIBBコンフェレンス”Renaissance of Marchantia polymorpha ~the genome and beyond”が開催された。Marchantia polymorphaはコケ植物ゼニゴケの学名である。研究の歴史は古く、植物の世代交代や性染色体の発見にも貢献した古典的モデル生物である。近年、陸上植物進化の基部に位置する優れたモデル生物として再び注目されている。今回は、2017年に国際共同研究としてゲノム論文がCell誌に発表されたのを機に、ゼニゴケのルネッサンスと題して今後の展開や役割について考えるシンポジウムを企画した。日本からの参加者119名に加え、海外から26名が参加した（欧州8か国16名、台湾5名、メキシコ3名、オーストラリア1名、アメリカ1名）。
プレナリートーク3題、招待講演27題、ポスターから選考された講演16題、テクニカルワークショップの話題提供6題、ポスター発表58題が発表された。ゼニゴケを用いた多様な発生生物学、細胞生物学、生理学、生態進化、エピゲノム、ノンコーディングRNA、染色体などの研究に加え、藻類や他のコケ植物の研究者によるメッセージ性に富む発表が続き、活発な議論が行われた。被子植物を用いて研究をリードしているトップクラスの研究者によって、ゼニゴケを扱うことで得ることができたブレークスルーも多く発表され、生命科学研究における研究対象やアプローチの広がりを考えるよい機会となった。タイトなスケジュールではあったが、参加者は実質的に交流する時間も十分に取ることができ、今後の研究交流や共同研究への発展の芽が多数生まれたことを期待している。また、当初はゼニゴケをタイトルに冠する企画がNIBBコンフェレンスにふさわしいか心配したが、多くの参加者から大規模の学会や特定の生命現象に関するシンポジウムとは異なる特徴を備えた有意義で貴重な国際研究集会で、発表・参加してよかった、楽しかったとのご意見をいただくことができた。これも師走の忙しい時期（海外参加者にはクリスマス直前）にも関わらず、企画を盛り上げてくれた講演者・参加者のおかげである。また、オーガナイザーも含め参加者が研究討論に集中することを可能にしてくれた国際連携室の強力な支援体制に深く感謝する。
本企画は基礎生物学研究所、文科省科学研究費補助金新学術領域「植物発生ロジック」、大学間連携バイオバックアッププロジェクト、京都大学SPIRITSプログラム、大幸財団に支援を受けた。
