「生殖の戦略」

 生殖すなわち子孫を作ることは、いかにも生きているという感じを与える生物現象ですが、「種」の存続に欠くことのできないものであり、生命がその誕生以来今日に至るまでの38億年間、連綿と絶えることなく続きえたのも、生殖という能力があってのことです。ヒトをはじめとする哺乳類は、生殖と性(種内で遺伝子を混ぜ合わせる仕組み)とが不可分に結びついた有性生殖のみを行い、雌雄も個体ごとに固定されています。しかし、生物の世界は実に多彩で、性と全く関係ない生殖(無性生殖)だけをするもの、状況に応じて無性生殖と有性生殖を使い分けるもの、性の転換を行うものなど、実にさまざまな生殖戦略がみられます。この会議では、分子生物学の歴史に名を残す大長老から大学院生までが一堂に会して、性は何故あるのかから始まって、どのような生殖戦略があり、それらはどのようにして進化したのか、その生物学的意味はなにかなどなど、性と生殖に関わる多くの問題をめぐって激しい議論を交わしました。研究者としての切磋琢磨の機会であるとともに、年齢や国籍を超えた友好の輪が広がった4日間でした。
