「ダイナミックゲノム」
本コンファレンスのタイトルは、コールドスプリングハーバーの研究者であり、ノーベル賞受賞者でもあるマクリントック博士の業績をまとめた本のタイトルからの借り物である。
近年多くの生物ゲノムの配列が明らかにされたにも関わらず、ゲノム進化がどのように起こってきたかについての説得力のあるモデルは、残念ながら未だ提案されてはいない。生物は明らかに進化し、その前提としてゲノムも明らかに変化してきた筈である。ならば、ゲノムの変化はどのように起ってきたのか？またそれを起こすどのような能力を生物は有するのか？についての最新の知見を持ち寄り、議論することで、現段階での進化に直接関与すると思われるゲノム動態の現状を知るためこのコンファレンスを企画した。
そのため、ゲノムに変化を及ぼす、複製、組み換え、修復の各過程の最前線を知るとともに、特にゲノムの動態に深く関与するタンパク質のコヘーシンとコンデンシンの構造と機能についての現状を明らかにし、恐らくゲノム進化に深く関与すると予想される遺伝子増幅の機構の現状を知り、最後にゲノム進化に重要な役割を担うと予想される変異生成についての現状を把握するため、４０名以上の国内外の第一線及び若手研究者の参加を得た。本コンファレンスを通して、これまで経験したことがないような環境の激変に直面した生物が、それをどのように察知し、ゲノムをどのように変化させてきてかについて知ることが今後の興味あるテーマであることを強く感じた次第である。マクリントック博士の提唱したBFB（Break-Fusion-Bridge）サイクルも、恐らくゲノム進化の重要な一過程であると信じつつ。（堀内 嵩）
