「21世紀の植物科学研究」
2008年9月13日から15日にかけて第55回NIBB カンファレンスおよびシロイヌナズナワークショップ2008共催による ”Frontiers of Plant Science in the 21st Century” が開催されました。
まず、本会議の最大の特色として、国内外の若手研究者の積極的な参加を図った点が挙げられます。本会議を企画するにあたっては、海外からの招聘研究者に、学生やポスドククラスの若手研究者の帯同を依頼し、彼らによる口頭発表をお願いしました。国際学会などにおいても海外の学生やポスドクによる口頭発表を目にする機会は意外と少ないものです。今回彼らのプレゼンテーションを目にした日本の若手研究者には、自身のプレゼンテーションを国際基準で考える上で、とても良い刺激になったと思います。
また、非常にユニークな試みとして、総研大生を中心とする日本の学生と、海外からの若手研究者によるパネルディスカッションが行われました。この企画の趣旨は、今後の植物科学に関する課題を、若手研究者が提案し議論するというものです。海外の若手研究者による議題からは，自分の専門外の植物科学の課題に関しても、深い知識と主張を持っていることが感じられ、その視野の広さに非常に感心させられました。また日本の学生による議題からは、将来の植物科学の課題を大局的に考えようとする姿勢が感じられました。
また，もう一つの特色として、企業・応用研究者の参加と言う点が挙げられます。今回ご参加いただいたサントリー株式会社の田中良和博士の独自の視点、基礎研究に対するご意見は非常に新鮮であり、普段私たちが属している基礎研究のコミュニティーの中にいるだけでは気がつかないご指摘を数多くいただきました。基礎研究といえども、応用へのアウトプットが常に求められる時代、今後同様の機会があれば、さらに多数の企業研究者にご参加いただき、植物科学に対する企業の視点、基礎研究に対するご意見を是非ともお伺いしたいです。
最後に会議全体を通しての感想ですが、各講演者の新規性のあるエキサイティングな話題提供により、植物科学の最先端の研究展開を広く知る良い機会になりました。ご参加くださった先生方に，この場を借りてもう一度御礼申し上げます。 （山口 貴大）
