「哺乳類胚発生における細胞コミュニテイー」
梅雨明けが宣言されると同時に、61回NIBB コンファレンス” Cellular Community in Mammalian Embryogenesis”が開幕した。暑い真夏の日差しが照るように、コンファレンスも熱い議論で盛り上がった。今回のNIBBコンファレンスは、科学研究費補助金・新学術領域研究「哺乳類初期発生の細胞コミュニティー」の共催によって国内以外にイギリス、スペイン、カナダ、中国、シンガポール、スイスからの招聘講演者を迎え一般参加者を含めると100名弱の参加者が集い、哺乳類初期発生という非常にフォーカスされた課題について議論する会として開催された。
新学術領域研究班が活動を開始した頃から特にマウスを中心とする哺乳類初期胚発生に関する理解は大きく進展しており、日本国内の研究グループが世界をリードするものが多くある。ほぼ一日を費やして着床前胚に関する発表およびそれに関連する濃密な討論がされ、参加者にとっても驚きが大きかったようである。会期中には、マウス胚以外の哺乳類初期胚に関する発表や、着床後胚、胚発生に関連する数理学的な研究などについても発表があった。国内外を問わず、これだけフォーカスされた課題について、先端の研究者が集まって議論する機会は他に類をみない希有な機会で、多くの参加者にとって歴史に残る印象的なものであったようである。広い世界の中で、共通の興味を持つ研究者が必ずしも多くないことがあるが、今回のNIBBコンファレンスにおいては、近い興味を持つ研究者が集まり、ポスターセッションやエクスカーション、懇親会の時間なども使って研究の中での課題や研究の将来像までじっくりと議論することができ、有意義であった。このような研究会が今後世界のどこかで継続的に開催されることを期待する声があったことは、主催者としても大変喜ばしいことである。
