「大腸菌 その統合像を目指して」
 
 第 41 回基礎生物学研究所コンファレンス「 Frontier of the Genome Biology of Escherichia coli(大腸菌 その統合像を目指して)」は、大腸菌の全ゲノム配列が決定されたことから、大腸菌の分子生物学の研究環境が大きく変化したことがその開催のきっかけとなっている。大腸菌に限らずゲノム生物学とも呼ぶべき世界的な流れが生まれ、実際多くの細菌や酵母などで、全遺伝子の構造とその配置が次々と明らかにされ、そこから得られる情報が、その分野の生物学に大きく寄与することが明らかとなりつつある。さらにそれに留まらず、生物を全遺伝子ネットワークの統合体として捉える視点からの研究が始められようとしている。特に、統合的視野からの大腸菌の解析は、今後の真核生物の同様な解析の試金石的意味あいから、大きな注目と期待が寄せられている。このような状況の下、分子生物学の開始、発展に寄与してきた過去と、ゲノム構造が明らかになった現在までの成果を把握し、今後の問題点に対する認識を共有するため、何が明らかにされねばならないかを、同内外のこの分野で第一線で活躍されている研究者を招いて、開かれたのが本コンファレンスである。参加者は、招待講演者が、国外 10 名及び国内 25 名、一般参加者を 合わせ約 110 名であり、終始活発な討論や情報交換がなされた。また、懇親会では、研究者同志の親密で友好的な交流がなされ、大変好評であった。今後のこの分野の進展に大きな寄与が出来たと考えている。
