「遺伝子増幅研究の新展開」
生命科学における分子遺伝学的手法の進歩により、遺伝子の制御や相互作用に関する膨大な情報が得られるようになった。これらの情報を、生物としての高次な振る舞いへと結びつけることが、生命科学の次の課題である。しかし多数の遺伝子が相互作用して、高次生命現象を作り出す機構を、実験だけから解くのは容易ではない。これに答える手法として、情報科学や数理科学の可能性が、現在注目されている。
この会議では、様々な生命現象に対して、数理・計算機的手法を用いて取り組む研究者や、これらの手法に関心のある実験研究者に広く参加を呼びかけ、国際交流を行った。国内外から91名（海外から12名）の参加者を得て、39題の研究発表がなされ、活発な議論が進められた。これまで、生命現象を対象とした数理的・計算機的研究は、バイオインフォマティクスや数理生物学、物理学など、異なる領域のそれぞれにおいて進められてきた。これら異分野間の研究者が、一同に会する画期的な会議となった。
会議のキーワードとして、理論的に注目を集めている「相互作用のネットワーク」を特に重視した。現在、代謝系から生態系まで、生命現象の様々なレベルにおける相互作用構造に関して、理論的研究が活発に行われている。それら異なる生命現象を対象とした研究が、この会議に於いては統一的に議論された。また、ネットワーク構造が生み出す、動的な振る舞いを明示することが、次の重要課題であるとの共通認識が得られた。この会議から始まる交流が、それぞれの分野をさらに発展させると期待できる。会議終了後には参加者の多くから、理論生命科学の将来の方向を予期させる会議であった、との謝辞が寄せられた。 （望月 敦史）
