第 39 回基礎生物学研究所コンファレンス「DYNAMIC ASPECTS OF SEED MATURATION AND GERMINATION(種子の形成と発芽のダイナミクス)」は当該分野の最新の研究成果について高度な討論をし、将来の展望を明らかにするために企画された。本コンファレンスは 21 世紀を目前にして、近い将来必ず訪れると言われている食糧危機に備えて、どのような研究をどのような方法で進展させていくべきかといった応用面からの問題提起と、これまでの植物生理学・分子生物学の基礎研究との融合を目的として進められ、有意義な成果をおさめた。国際的に第一線で活耀している研究者を招き、終始活発な討論と情報交換がなされた。また本コンファレンスを契機として共同研究の企画なども推進され、内外の参加者からレベルの高い友好的な会議であったとの評価を受けた。参加者は国外から 15 名、国内からは 19 名、基礎生物学研究所からは 23 名であった。
