Quantitative Bioimaging

10回目の開催となるNIBB-EMBL合同シンポジウムは”Quantitative Bioimaging”と題して行われた。本来2011年の3月に開催予定であった会が、東日本大震災の影響により開催1週間前に断念することになり、今回再度企画しなおし、無事開催することができた。第９回の合同シンポジウムに引き続き、生物学におけるイメージングについて更に深く議論する場として開催することを趣旨として、今回は定量生物イメージングの先端技術や今後の領域の発展性に関して議論を深めることを目的とした。海外から10名、国内から15名の招待講演者を迎え、生物学で用いる光学的プローブ、新規顕微鏡技術、超解像技術、数理モデル化、3次元生物学に至る幅広い分野に関しての発表がなされた。それぞれの発表の後にはセッション全体に関しての総合討論の時間を設け、比較的コンパクトな会場の中では熱い議論が繰り広げられた。口頭発表の会場内にポスター発表の場が設けられ、初日の夕方に設けられたポスター発表の時間に限らず、会期中の休憩時間・食事の時間などにもポスターを前にして、盛んに討論される姿が見られた。特に若手の講演者も多く、生物学の他に数学、物理学、光学などの学問的背景を持つ研究者や顕微鏡メーカーの技術者も集まるという希有な機会となり、国内外からの参加者の感想からも、通常の学会とは異なった環境で今後の研究の方法などについても考える刺激になったようである。
　先端の研究者から学生までの広い年齢層の異なる学問的バックグラウンドを持つ研究者が集まり、比較的コンパクトな会場で自由闊達な雰囲気の中、活発な議論が繰り広げられたことが印象的であった。

The 10th NIBB-EMBL Symposium 2013 on quantitative bioimaging was a great experience for me. During the three days there were many high-class talks, covering both the physical and the biological point of view on the current hot topics in bioimaging. The talks presented great new methods of fluorescence-microscopy as well as various interesting research-topics. I especially enjoyed the discussions at the end of the talks and the possibility of talking to the speakers directly during the coffee-breaks. These occasions and the poster-session led to some profitable conversations in a comfortable atmosphere which not only answered technical questions but also gave food for thought regarding my future research. The excursion and the convivial evenings were a great pleasure and made the symposium even more enriching. I would like to thank everyone involved in the conference for the nice time I had in Japan.
