第一回NIBB-Princeton大学連携シンポジウム“Proteomics, Metabolomics, and Beyond“が、2011年11月1日（火）〜2日（水）に岡崎コンファレンスセンターにて開催された。このシンポジウムは、2010年に締結された自然科学研究機構とプリンストン大学との学術連携協定に基づくもので、基礎生物学研究所とプリンストン大学のDepartment of Molecular Biologyが中心となって、学術交流と研究の推進を目指している。第一回のシンポジウムは、当初2011年6月に開催予定であったが、東日本大震災のため止む無く延期となっていた。今回、アメリカ東海岸の季節外れの豪雪のためプリンストン大学からの参加者の足が乱れたが、3名の参加を得て、念願の開催に至った。
本シンポジウムでは、プロテオミクス、メタボロミクスを中心とした「オミックス」のアプローチによる新しい方法論を用いて、さまざまな生物現象を解析しているユニークな研究が一堂に介した。酵母を用いた細胞外栄養環境と細胞内代謝との連関、バクテリアの代謝酵素分布の構造的基盤と細胞骨格の起源、脂質やタンパク質の空間的分布の網羅的解析（イメージングマススペクトロメトリー）、タンパク修飾された植物ホルモンの同定と作用機構、細胞内におけるATPのリアルタイムイメージングなど最新の研究についての講演は、生物学が新たな局面を迎えていることを実感させるものであった。さらに、ショートトークおよびポスター発表では、基礎生物学研究所で進行している研究について活発な議論が行なわれた。参加者一人一人の考えや興味をお互いに理解して、今後の交流と発展が楽しみなシンポジウムであった。プリンストン大学や日本国内からの参加者は、シンポジウムののち基礎生物学研究所の施設・研究室見学を通して更に交流を深めた。
