OBCは基礎生物学分野における新しい研究テーマの発掘と研究者コミュニティの形成を目指して毎年開催される合宿形式のユニークな国際会議である。その第9回会議は、"Marine Biology II"と題し、OBC6 (Marine Biology)を発展させる形で、特にサンゴを中心とした刺胞動物およびその共生藻に焦点を当て、前半の１０月１４日から１６日を岡崎で、後半の１７日から１９日までは沖縄に場所を移して開かれた。発展の著しい７分野（生理生態、ゲノミクス、概日リズム、光合成、発生進化、共生）の第一線で活躍する研究者が４４名（うち海外参加者２４名）招かれ、現在の課題、今後の展開について、研究発表、討論、情報交換が行われた。オーガナイザーは、皆川純 基生研教授、佐藤矩行 沖縄科学技術大学院大学教授、Thomas C. G. Bosch Kiel大教授がつとめた。刺胞動物やその共生藻を題材とする最先端研究者が一同に集まった例はなく、それぞれの分野の目覚ましい発展、新しい切り口が、自分の研究分野を捉え直す絶好の機会となった。会議の終盤には、ポストゲノム時代の１つの方向性として"Eco-Devo"が提唱されるに至り、今後の新しい生物学分野を切り開くというOBCの目的にかなった会議であった。 （皆川 純）
