古生物学の第一人者である舒徳干教授の来日にあたり、当研究所でもご講演いただけることになりました。中国澄江化石群の最新の知見をもとに、脊椎動物の進化仮説についてお話しいただきます。

Cambrian Explosion & Chengjiang Faunas wwith discussion on rise of deuterostomes and origin of vertebrates

Cambrian Explosion is recognized as a true event in life history on Earth. The famous Early Cambrian Chengjiang fossile Lagerstatte (about 530 millions of years ago) is one of the best ""window"" through which the Cambrian could be investigated. This unique fossil treasure has produced wealth of well-preserved soft-bodied specimens. Many phyla or animal groups in protostomes, such several main branches of arthropods, brachiopods, as well as various worms have been found in Chengjiang. However, none of deuterostomes, which usually bear no hard skeleton inside their bodies and cuticles on the surface of the organisms, had been seen in this Lagerstatte before 1995. Since 1995, nearly all main branches in deuterostomes, such cephalochordates, urochordates, hemichordates-like animals, true vertebrates, and extinct phylum Vetulicolia have been revealed chiefly by Northwest University team in this treasure.
On the basis of those remarkable discoveries of early deuterostomes, combined with data of modern zoology and molecular biology, a ""five-step"" hypothesis on deuterostome evolution and origin of vertebrates has been proposed by Dr. Shu. The last four steps are basically consistent with the ""four-step"" framework of deuterostome evolution of modern zoology, however, the first key step, represented by extinct vetulicolians, should be of significance.
Based on finds of new extinct phylum Vetulocystata, which represent a link between Vetulicolia and Echinodermata, the ""five-step"" hypothesis is now modified into ""six-step"" evolution of deuterostomes.
