Cytokinin, a plant growth hormone, has recently gained much attention for its direct role in crop yield. Plant-borne cytokinins are also known to reinforce defense against non-cytokinin producing pathogens such as tobacco mosaic virus. However, role of plant cytokinins and molecular mechanism in plant response on biotic stress, especially against non-cytokinin secreting pathogens which is one of the major factors restricting global food production, is remained elusive. We recently found that cytokinins modulate SA signaling cascade to augment resistance against non-cytokinin secreting pathogens. Recent studies stressed the diverse and critical role of cytokinins in plant defense response will be discussed.
