Medaka has been recognized as an ideal model system for biology and biomedical science, especially after the publication of a draft genome sequence and initiation of the provision of various medaka resources through the National BioResource Project Medaka. Medaka is used in a wide variety of subjects, from basic biology to applied science, compared to other fish models. Because of this there are few opportunities for medaka researchers in the different fields to meet and get to know each other. In addition, the number of researchers using medaka has been growing rapidly during the last decade. It is now apparent that we must expand the exchange among this new wave of medaka researchers. We therefore decided to organize the 1st strategic meeting for medaka research from the 23rd to 24th of November at the National Institute for Basic Biology (NIBB), Okazaki, Japan. This is the first international strategic meeting for medaka research aimed at promoting networking among medaka researchers worldwide. Posters and oral talks from the representative PIs will be presented.
