Promoting Diversity

Foundational Policy for Cultivating Diversity at the National Institute for Basic Biology

NINS is an equal opportunity employer, and NIBB actively promotes a research environment rich in diversity that attracts excellent researchers irrespective of gender, nationality, age or cultural background. To this end, NIBB strongly encourages applicants of various genders or nationalities and seeks to form research groups that encompass diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Maternity, childcare, or nursing care leave is taken into consideration if applicants clearly indicate the period of leave on their CV or other documents.

Financial Support for Article Publication Fees to Encourage Diversity

NIBB provide financial support for article publication fees, including Open Access (OA) fees.
Eligibility: Female or non-Japanese researchers affiliated with the NIBB (there are exemptions, see below).
Permanent employees and students (including  Sokendai and othe university students) are excluded.
Recipients must be the first or the corresponding author (including co-first or co-corresponding authors) of the original research paper.
We provide a grant of up to 200,000 yen per submission.
If the publication fee is less than 200,000 yen, we will cover the actual expenses.
Depending on the financial situation of NIBB, the grant amount may be reduced.
We limit one grant per person per year, with exceptions possible in cases of low application numbers.
Applications are accepted at any time.
After evaluation by the Diversity Encouraging Committee, notifications of approval—including the granted amount—will be issued to applicants under the name of the Director General.
Grants are allocated to departments or laboratories as operational expenses.
We aim to provide grants promptly after approval; however, laboratories may request funding in the following fiscal year if needed.

Please submit your application, along with the necessary documents (PDF of the paper and payment receipts), to Shin-ichi Higashijima, Chair of the Diversity Encouraging Committee, at shigashi[at]nibb.ac.jp (replace [at] with @).
