Living Conifers Are Not Monophyletic: New Evidence from Comparative Chloroplast Genomics

One of most arguable issues in seed plant evolution is the phylogeny of conifers. Based on the morphology, nobody suspected the monophyly but Dr. Chaw’s group and others found that a part of conifers is sister to the enigmatic gymnosperms Gnetales rather than other conifers, indicating paraphyly of conifers. Dr. Chaw will review the present understanding of conifer phylogeny with incorporating their new results in chloroplast genome rearrangement.
