Research Summary

(Written in 2015)
Environmental factors including synthetic chemicals found in the environment have the capacity to disrupt sex-determination, sex-differentiation, development and reproduction in wildlife. These chemicals may bind to steroid hormone receptors and/or nuclear receptors and evoke hormonal/anti-hormonal effects and unpredictable effects, respectively. Thus, we are currently studying 1) molecular mechanisms of environmental estrogens and sex hormones act during critical developmental windows, 2) microarray analysis of estrogen responsive genes, 3) phylogeny of estrogen receptors, 4) temperature-dependent sex determination of American alligators, 5) male production in Daphnids by juvenile hormones, and 6) gene zoo, collection of gene information of various animal species.
