Within plant cells there are various organelles, such as chloroplasts etc. One such organelle, peroxisomes, are required for functions of plant growth like germination, photosynthesis, and seed formation. However, the mechanisms of peroxisome formation have remained poorly understood. The Department of Cell Biology of the National Institute for Basic Biology’s Shino Goto (SOKENDAI Graduate Student), Assistant Professor Shoji Mano, and Professor Mikio Nishimura have discovered a novel plant-specific factor involved in peroxisomal protein transport. These results were published in the international plant science journal ‘The Plant Cell’ online version.
