Aphyllanthes is a monotypic genus composed of Aphyllanthes monspeliensis, which is distributed in the Mediterranean region.
Aphyllanthes monspeliensisは光合成をしない鱗片状の葉を花序の基部に数枚持つ。１花序に１つの花を付け、光合成をする葉を付けない戦略と、１花序にたくさんの花を付け、光合成をする葉を付ける戦略を考える。この時に、花序と葉の光合成効率が同じで、両戦略で形成される花序と葉の総数が同じだとすると、両方の適応度は同じになるように思われる。しかし、実際にはAphyllanthesのように前者の戦略をとる植物は稀である。どうしてなのだろうか。
A single flower is formed at the tip of an inflorescence. There are two strategies: (1) multiple flowers in an inflorescence, to which several photosynthetic leaves accompany and (2) a single flower in an inflorescence and several inflorescences are formed without photosynthetic leaves. If the total number of inflorescences and leaves are the same in the two strategies and photosynthetic activities of a leaf and an inflorescence are the same, fitness of two strategies appears to be similar. However, taxa with the latter strategy, such as Aphyllanthes are rare, but the reason is unknown.
