Yang et al. 2007は花冠上唇のねじれ方によって媒介昆虫であるマルハナバチ類の体への花粉の付く位置が変わり、それによって異種交雑を防いでいることを示した。シオガマギク属は、種によってさまざまな上唇の曲がり方があり、シオガマギクでは上唇以外に花全体もねじれているが、同じ理由だろうか。発生過程のどこを変えるとこのような変化が生じるのだろうか。
Yang et al. (2007) showed that different twistings of the upper lip of a corolla cause different positioning of pollen deposition on bumble bee bodies. This functions to prevent hybridization between different species. Varied floral morphology in Pedicularis may be caused by the similar reason.
