Comments for the NIBB-EMBL Meeting
Dr. Anne Ephrussi (EMBL)
The 5th NIBB-EMBL Cell and Developmental Biology meeting was a huge success from start to finish, a great scientific and personal pleasure for all of us participants. From the movement of molecules and organelles in single cells, to morphogenetic movements and the shaping of organs, from cytoskeletal to cell and tissue polarity, from epigenetics to evolution, the science first-rate and diverse, and the methods state-of-the art. A sign of the meeting's success are the collaborations initiated there - thanks to the lively discussions and the highly collegial interactions, in a setting particularly conducive to exchange. On behalf of all of the EMBL participants, I thank our NIBB hosts for this extremely stimulating meeting and the very warm welcome extended to all of us.
Dr. Scott D. Emr (UCSD, USA)
The NIBB-EMBL conference in Okazaki, Japan this past December was an outstanding international conference that included scientist from Japan, Europe and the US. It was an exciting meeting with considerable discussion both during the meeting sessions and the social activities. The program included innovative technologies in structural biology, live cell imaging and molecular biology. Each speaker presented new unpublished data and discussed the key questions that need to be addressed in their field. New insights into the roles for ubiquitin and ubiquitin-related molecules in cell signaling, membrane trafficking and protein turn-over were presented. It was the best meeting in 2006 that I attended covering these key topics in cell and molecular biology.
Dr. Jason Swedlow (University of Dundee)
The NIBB/EMBL Frontiers in Imaging Meeting brought together a number of world leaders in cell and tissue imaging. The talks were uniformly great, with good questions after talks and discussion during coffee breaks. This is in large part due to a great invited speakers and a great audience. The ample time given to posters was appropriate. The organization of the meeting was at all times extraordinary, both during the meeting itself and afterwards during meals and social events. I would happily attend another meeting and congratulate the organizers on their fine efforts.
Dr. Jan Ellenberg (EMBL)
In my opinion the meeting was certainly a big scientific success (I had unanimously positive comments from all the speakers about that) and also a real pleasure with all the excellent dinners and excursions you had so kindly organized. All of the speakers and EMBL students made extremely positive comments on this to me. For me personally one of the aspects of our collaboration - the promotion of exchange between Japan and EMBL - has certainly already worked. I hope that all of the attendants enjoyed the meeting as much as I did. Again, thank you so much for all the work and effort the NIBB put into it.
