The first NIBB-EMBL PhD Mini-Symposium was held at EMBL, Heidelberg on 28 October. Six PhD students from NIBB and three from Nagoya University got together with EMBL predocs to exchange and discuss their recent results. This symposium and subsequent "lab tour" also connected our students with EMBL PIs who are in the field of their respective interests. On 29-31 October the 11th International EMBL PhD Students Symposium "Puzzles in Biology; Putting the pieces together" was held at EMBL. The program contained three sessions; the first aimed to shed light on the latest technical innovations in the field of Biology, the second session focused on complex puzzles which had been resolved by integrating data from different scientific fields, and the final covered several issues which illustrated beneficial relationships between basic biology and applied studies to understand the mechanisms causing human diseases. Our PhD students presented their research work during the poster and the short-talk session. It was a great opportunity for our PhD students to meet students from a variety of European countries and hear about their interesting work. Moreover, they were very much impressed by the scientific atmosphere and cutting-edge researches at EMBL. We hope to continue this collaboration in the future. |

This was my first experience of an English oral presentation in a foreign country and its preparation was a tough job for me. This opportunity of an oral presentation was, however, a precious one and gave me an experience of discussion over my research with EMBL people. A student of EMBL was assigned as a guide for each student from Japan, which made it easier to communicate with EMBL students and to have a glimpse of students' life at EMBL and their view of research. I found students at EMBL are much more aggressive and positive in their research than I had expected, which I think we should follow. |

At the 11th International EMBL PhD Student Symposium, there were a lot of interesting presentations by researchers from various fields, but the most surprising thing was that the whole symposium was organized by the EMBL students. From the invited speakers, I could easily imagine how widely the EMBL students’ knowledge and interest range. And I thought it would be a fruitful experience for them to organize such a big symposium from the time of being students. |

The largest fruit I obtained in this Ph.D symposium was that I could have an opportunity to communicate with students of similar ages from various countries. I could talk with students from unfamiliar countries for me such as Israel and Nigeria. I could experience everyday life of students in Europe such as dance party and talk over drinks. I found, contrary to my expectation, we have much in common. |

It was with great pleasure that I attended the 8th NIBB-EMBL Joint Meeting "Evolution: Genomes, Cell Types and Shapes". The meeting covered an impressive range of research topics within the evolutionary field, some of which I hadn't been exposed to before. It was a great learning experience for myself scientifically as well as culturally. I particularly enjoyed meeting the students and would like to thank the hospitality of our Japanese hosts for making the visit a wonderful experience. I look forward to returning the hospitality of our hosts on their next visit to Heidelberg. |

It was a great opportunity for me to attend the meeting. I was impressed by many advanced research for evolution, which include wide range of topics in evolutionary biology. In addition, it was a really good experience for me to go for convivial meeting with EMBL students. I enjoyed talking with them for daily lives, our research projects, our institute and so on. I am looking forward to attending the next NIBB-EMBL meeting. |

I spent good time with EMBL students.I was impressed that they performed their experiments vigorously, and made good progress. And we enjoyed dinner and sake. It was a good opportunity to introduce Japanese food to them. This meeting gave me a good chance to get to know good friends. |

I very much enjoyed the 2nd NIBB-EMBL Symposium “Frontiers in Bioimaging” and my stay in Japan in general. I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of our Japanese hosts and would like to thank both the students and the organizers of the meeting for this wonderful experience. The conference was organized perfectly and I had many exciting discussions and conversations with the Japanese students. Furthermore, I also very much appreciated the interesting opportunity of getting a tour of the city of Okazaki. Thank you! |

For me the conference was very interesting: I learned not only about cutting edge science but also about the Japanese culture. The poster session gave us the opportunity to talk to the students and to learn about their research. I also enjoyed a lot the evening, when the students invited us for dinner. We had very interesting discussions about the differences in our everyday lives, the cultures and societies. I am grateful that I got the opportunity to participate in the meeting and would recommend it to anybody. |

I was really impressed by the symposium. I could learn about the most advanced research and the different approaches of imaging through the symposium. I was impressed by the good personality of EMBL students, to say nothing of their research. I was surprised that they were interested in the wide variety of things not only about research but also culture, society and so on, and they were energetic. I had really enjoyed the good time with EMBL students, especially international karaoke! I am thankful for the important opportunity to join in the symposium and hope for the next opportunity. |

It was a good opportunity for me to participate in this symposium and discuss our research with the visitors from EMBL. I was impressed by their imaging research presentation. It was also a nice experience to go for dinner and karaoke with the students. We talked about our daily lives and our studies and I was interested in the things we shared and the points of difference between us. It was a good chance for me to widen my experience and knowledge. I was very glad to spend time with them. |

The 2nd NIBB-EMBL symposium ‘Frontier in Bioimaging’ provided me with an opportunity to learn about the pioneering bioimaging technology and how I can apply it to my research. Apart from the well-organized symposium, I was able to spend the time with the EMBL students and we had lots of fun. I’m looking forward to participating in the next NIBB-EMBL symposium. |
