「モデル生物メダカの新たな発展」

 実験技術とゲノム基盤情報が整備され、新たなモデル脊椎動物としての地位を急速に確立しつつあるメダカについて、国際シンポジウムを開催して欲しいとの声は以前から国内外の各方面にありました。今回、NBRPバイオリソースの中核機関である基礎生物学研究所がそれに応える形で、第54 回NIBB コンファレンスとして国際会議が開催することになりました。2 日間に渡り、国内外の最新の研究の発表と動向が紹介され、今後の研究の方向について議論が行なわれました。

 メダカを用いた研究の特徴は、研究対象となっている生物現象の巾の広さに表れています。今回のシンポジウムでも、個体レベルでは配偶選択行動に関する研究から環境モニタリングの研究まで、また視物質の進化と目の構造を生息環境から関連づけた研究、実験動物メダカの1 つの特徴である野生集団を用いた研究など、新たな生物学の地平を拓くであろう研究も数多く発表されました。またメダカを利用して発生学の普遍的現象を解明した第一級の研究や、歴史のある性分化決定研究の最新の動向も紹介されました。

 その一方で研究を支える実験系の開発の1 端も伺い知ることができました。任意の遺伝子に変異を入れることのできる画期的方法の実例、全能性培養細胞や遺伝子発現誘導法の開発など、さまざまな実験的な操作はほとんど可能になりつつある状況と言ってよいでしょう。さらに基礎生物学研究所が世界に向けて発信を開始したゲノム基盤整備情報と多数の野生集団と変異体についての紹介も行なわれ、研究の根幹をなすリソース事業の質の高さを改めて認識することとなりました。 メダカを用いた研究状況を世界の第一線の研究者が一堂に会して概観する機会は今までになく、今回のシンポジウムにより、それぞれの研究の方向性を見定めるまたとない機会を提供することとなりました。

 この会議は注目を集め、ポスター発表を行なわなかったにも関わらず、国内外から100 名近い参加者があり、その様子はNature Digest にも特集記事として紹介されました。(田中 実)
